Project Case Studies
Chain Reaction Theatre Company
Funding from A2E’s Community Access Fund (CAF) has helped the Chain Reaction Theatre Company to tour Newham’s primary schools with a new production.
The well established theatre company have produced a piece called “Time to Talk” which presents children with the opportunity to realise the importance of talking about their experiences and feelings.
Using a combination of popular song, realistic drama and spoof sketches, the show is a 35 minute piece of theatre that gives young people an insight in to the benefits of opening up about their emotions and feeling comfortable with expressing themselves.
Children also receive a pack in the classroom and do work on the topic before and after the production to enforce the message. This has been produced in conjunction with Newham’s behaviour department.
The project was awarded £7,340 of CAF funding and received match funding of £1,000 from the Mercer’s Foundation. This covered the full cost of the production and has enabled them to tour 13 schools in the borough, performing to 9?11 year olds.
Sarah Choppen, the theatre company’s artistic director says, “We’re very excited about this project as it’s very important to get the message across to children. They need to know from an early age that it’s good to talk about things that are worrying them and that it’s not uncool to show emotion. This is an issue that schools feel strongly about too and it’s great to see such enthusiasm and support from the teachers.”
The Chain Reaction Theatre Company has taken several other productions to Newham’s schools, covering subjects such as relationships, racism, healthy eating, sexual health, drugs, bullying and smoking.
They intend to continue to raise funds so that they can bring their work to more schools in Newham.
