North Woolwich library re-opens with state of the art facilities

Over the last few months residents at North Woolwich have seen a scurry of activity at 5 Pier Parade as finishing touches are made to their new state of the art library. The library re-opened its doors to the public on 8th January 2007, but was officially opened by the Mayor on Tuesday 16th January 2007. The refurbishment was funded by £155,000 from the London Borough of Newham, Early Start, Access to Excellence and Royal Docks Trust.
The improvement complements Transport for London’s development efforts in the nearby approach to King George V station, on the DLR line. Located next to, and linked to the Docklands Local Service Centre, it forms part of a major thoroughfare for residents and visitors. It is also hoped that by being located adjacent to Newham Council Local Service centre, will also maximise on the borough’s comprehensive service offerings available to the public.
Newham Library Services head, Ms Wainwright, says the new library is being modelled on the award winning interior design concepts found at Stratford and Forest Gate libraries.
”The new open-plan library has been designed to be inviting to people from the outside, with an innovative tunnel-frame entrance. This service will also be fully accessible for the disabled, featuring automatic doors and toilet facilities for children, their parents and carers alike. These developments reinforce the London Borough of Newham’s commitment to making the area a ‘better place for people to choose to live and work’, while providing a high standard of facilities and services, which residents have come to expect.” says Ms Wainwright.
