Celebrating Achievements in Haringey
Date: 02 Mar 2006
Over the past seven years, residents in Northumberland Park and West Green have reaped the benefits of two government-funded programmes aimed at improving residents quality of life and enhancing their life opportunities.
Joining Up Northumberland Park (JUNP) and West Green Learning Neighbourhood Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) progammes, funded by the London Development Agency, have accomplished a number of successes. These have included piloting the Haringey Neighbourhood Managment programme, enhancing the physical environment, tackling crime, upgrading facilities and improving residents? access to training and employment.
Central to each programmes? achievements has been the development of two key resident-focussed centres. The JUNP Neighbourhood Resource Centre was built and has since become the hub for local resident services including training and cultural activities in the area. In West Green a flagship learning centre has been built, in partnership with Park View Academy school. The centre runs a number of courses which has opened up a range of life-long learning opportunites for local residents of all ages.
Both programmes are led by a Neighbourhood Management Board made up of local residents, businesses, councillors, the police and other agencies. The boards are a genuine example of local people leading and shaping long-term community regeneration.
Haringey Council?s Executive Member for Community Involvement, Councillor Lorna Reith, says the two SRB programmes are a testament to community involvement.
Both programmes put local residents at their centre and this is the heart of their success. Following the success on the ground of this kind of neighbourhood management working Haringey is now extending this approach to the rest of the borough.
At the end of March the SRB funding for the two programmes, managed by Urban Futures, will come to an end. A commemorative dinner is being held, on Wednesday March 8 at the Regency Suite in Bruce Grove, to celebrate the achievements of each programme.
The event will be attended by local residents, government representatives, local ward councillors and numerous community stakeholders.
Haringey Mayor, Councillor Eddie Griffith will be chairing the event and a keynote address will be given by Claudette Forbes, director of Regeneration at the London Development Agency.
Urban Futures chief executive, Phil Langslow says Urban Futures has been at the forefront of working with local people, agencies and stakeholders in the delivery of the programme.
We have witnessed first-hand the improvements in the two areas and we look forward to continuing to work with residents from West Green and Northumberland Park through our on-going programmes to add value has already been achieved.
