Newham’s celebrates the successes of its Access to Excellence programme

Date: 24 Jan 2007

Over the past seven years, the London Borough of Newham has benefited from Access to Excellence (A2E), an £18.75m Single Regeneration Budget funding programme aimed at transforming and revitalising the area by improving social and economic wealth.

The programme is coming to an end, but the capital invested will ensure its legacy will continue for many years to come.

A2E awarded funds to a number of organisations to run projects aimed at improving local residents' access to employment and training, and enhancing their quality of life. This has led to over 2600 resisidents have being placed into jobs and this number is continuing to rise. Nearly 5000 qualifications have been acheived and almost 400 new businesses have been started.

To celebrate the end of the programme, Urban Futures, on behalf of the London Development Agency and the London Borough of Newham, have organised celebration events in the three pathway areas of Manor Park, Custom House & Canning Town, and North Woolwich & Silvertown. Everyone in the community is welcome to attend the event(s).

The celebrations will include family entertainment such as face painting, balloon modelling and a Harry Potter magician. Drinks and refreshments will also be provided. Guest speakers include Steven Timms, MP for East Ham, who will be attending the Manor Park event and Paul Leslie, A2E Chair.

Paul Leslie said: “The A2E programme has added value to the regeneration of Newham. The £18.75million has been spent to purchase land, develop and support projects and train local people to be job ready. The aim of the programme has been to impact on the employability of local people and leave a lasting legacy for future generations. We have not only achieved this aim, but we have also created an environment where local people’s ambitions can be realised in the immediate and long term.”
